Extract from the introduction:

During the last two and a half centuries Ottershaw Park Estate has seen numerous owners come and go. Each was an eminent and wealthy citizen seeking his or her place in the country, adapting the estate to their own particular requirements by the construction of new buildings, the modification of existing ones or the acquisition and sale of surrounding lands. Estates which have remained in the same family for generations often have archives containing documents accumulated over generations providing detailed information for historians. In contrast, as a result of frequent changes in ownership, Ottershaw’s documentary heritage has become scattered, and what remains is deposited in numerous public and private collections. This has made the writing of its history a complex and time consuming business, but all the more rewarding for that.

The range of sources I have drawn on for information is extensive. The main local and national archives have provided a wealth of information but many less obvious ones including personal collections have also been a source of useful material. Local and national newspapers have proved to be a veritable gold mine of information as there appears to have been no event, however trivial, that has not been reported somewhere in the press!

This book is divided into three parts; the first is a general historical survey of the development of the estate from its founding in the 1760s by Sir Thomas Sewell through to the beginning of the 21st century. Where appropriate I have selected individuals who lived or worked on the estate for particular mention.

The second part is a detailed account of the history of the buildings on the estate, many of which no longer survive. The level of detail provided varies enormously depending on the availability of source documents. Greater emphasis has been placed on buildings dating from before World War II as these are of greater historical importance and interest. Where appropriate, occupants of the historic buildings have been listed.

Part 3 provides brief biographies of the owners and principal leaseholders of Ottershaw Park. The range of personalities is great and each influenced the appearance of the estate and the architectural design of its buildings to a greater or lesser extent.
